Understanding the treatments
Explore how different musculoskeletal treatments are intended to work, and why individual assessment and the strength of the evidence matter.

GUNA collagen
GUNA injectable collagen products are designed for selected musculoskeletal applications. Their proposed role involves supporting connective-tissue structures. Evidence for specific uses, and particularly for combinations with shockwave, varies; your clinician should discuss the available research and uncertainties.

Hyaluronic acid injectables
Hyaluronic acid is a component of joint fluid. Some injectable formulations are used for selected joint conditions, but recommendations and effectiveness vary by product, condition and clinical guideline. Product-specific indications and risks need review.

Shockwave therapy
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy uses acoustic pulses delivered to a targeted region. Evidence is condition-specific, and it is not suitable for every patient or every source of pain.

EMTT
Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy uses pulsed electromagnetic fields. Research into clinical benefits is developing, so claims should be considered in the context of the specific condition and quality of available studies.

Clinical decisions
A treatment recommendation should consider diagnosis, examination findings, medical history, contraindications, alternatives, realistic goals and follow-up. No treatment can guarantee pain relief or tissue regeneration.

COLLAGEN · REVIEW · 2013Collagen medical devices and musculoskeletal pain
L. Milani reviews clinical studies and assessments from 2010–2012 on locally administered collagen medical devices in painful joint and connective-tissue conditions. This is an older review, not definitive evidence for every GUNA application.

KIOMEDINE · CLINICAL TRIAL · 2025PIONEER — 12-month randomized controlled trial
In 104 patients with difficult-to-treat knee osteoarthritis, the trial compared CM-chitosan (KioMedineVSone) with Hylan G-F 20. Both groups improved; the authors reported clinically important but not statistically significant differences favouring CM-chitosan at 12 months.

KIOMEDINE · CLINICAL STUDY · 2022APROOVE — first-in-human clinical study
This 26-week, patient-blinded study assessed single-injection CM-chitosan for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. The CM-chitosan group included 63 participants; a separate Durolane group was used as a scientific control, without a direct between-group comparison.

KIOMEDINE · PRODUCT RESOURCEKioMedine physician brochure
A manufacturer-produced resource explaining CM-chitosan, its proposed joint-lubrication and free-radical-scavenging mechanisms, and selected clinical findings. Promotional material should be considered separately from independent peer-reviewed research.
Intended for healthcare professionals.
